A bridge can be made to replace a missing tooth or teeth as long as there is sound healthy teeth either side of the space. The bridge is supported by the natural tooth or teeth either side of the gap.
WHAT TYPES OF BRIDGES ARE AVAILABLE?
Traditional — Caps are bonded over teeth that lie on either side of the gap. This is the strongest of the bridges and can be used anywhere in the mouth.
Cantilever — Cap is bonded over a single tooth next to the missing one. This is generally only suitable for low stress-regions such as at the front of the mouth.
Resin-bonded — Porcelain or plastic teeth with gums that are supported by metal “wings”. This is particularly suitable where stress is minimal and where the "wing" can be out of view.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A FITTING?
We will reduce the tooth or teeth for a proper crown fit
An impression will be taken of your bite for bridge fabrication
The colour of porcelain prosthetics can then be customised
We will fit you with a temporary or dress the preparation until the lab makes your permanent one
You will come in again for permanent bridge fitting
HOW DO I CARE FOR BRIDGES?
Bridges old and new will almost always have gaps around and beneath it, which need careful attention with regular cleaning and flossing. Extra care should be given to the supporting teeth, as without these, the bridge will almost certainly fail.
There is a range of specially adapted aids to help access the areas around your bridge. Please ask your dentist to demonstrate these if you are having trouble.
ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES TO BRIDGES?
The only alternatives to a dental bridge are dentures or implants. Dentures may be and difficult to get used to especially when it is only replacing one or two teeth, however may be necessary even if you are only using it as a temporary. Dental implants involve having a false tooth attached to a post that has been placed into the jaw bone. This can be expensive, and is generally only suitable for those that are medically fit with healthy gums and good bone, but is the only thing that can take the force of everyday actions like eating, similar to the tooth is it replacing.
