A crown, sometimes known as a ‘cap’ is an ideal restoration for teeth that are very weak, have a large filling or have been root treated. These fit over the remaining part of trimmed teeth, making it stronger and gives it the shape of a natural tooth. Crowns are available in a variety of materials and it is possible to match the shade to your natural teeth.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A CROWN FITTING?
We will reduce the problematic tooth for a proper crown fit
An impression will be taken of your bite for crown fabrication
The colour of porcelain prosthetics can then be customised
We will fit you with a temporary crown until the lab makes your permanent one
You will come in again for permanent crown fitting
WHAT TYPE OF CROWNS ARE AVAILABLE?
There are different types of crowns available depending on your needs and whether you are having private treatment or treatment on the NHS.
AVAILABLE ON THE NHS
All Metal - Back teeth
These crowns are the most conservative and are used to cover back teeth which are less visible. This crown is great for restoring the shape and function of your tooth.Metal and Porcelain - front teeth
These have a metal inner core (which is great for strength) with porcelain bonded on the front (lip) facing side to provide a natural appearance, thus metal is usually still on the biting surface of the tooth. These can only be provided on front teeth. The porcelain may fracture over time.
AVAILABLE PRIVATELY
All Porcelain or Ceramic
There is a range of porcelain and ceramic available which your dentist can help you decide which is the best for your tooth. They offer a more natural look but are more complex to produce so are often more expensive than crowns which include metal. These are most suitable for front teeth if a highly cosmetic result is needed.Metal and porcelain
These have a metal inner core (which is great for strength) with porcelain bonded on the front (lip) facing side to provide a natural appearance, thus metal is usually still on the biting surface of the tooth. These need less trimming than the all porcelain or ceramic crowns and can be suitable for your front or back teeth. All Metal - metal or gold coloured
These are usually used to cover back teeth, but can also be used for a gold front tooth. This crown is great for restoring the shape and function of your tooth.
